Somewhere Over the Atlantic
Years ago, though not that many, writers penned poetic words about flying over the Atlantic with just that. A pen. Then the laptop came. Yet, all the while, when signed "somewhere over the Atlantic" it remained figurative as publication occurred long after. In turn, such signatures usually did their part to instill wanderlust in aimless readers like me.
Now, tablets and smartphones...and wifi have changed the game. Flying somewhere over the Atlantic now means I can rad and respond to student emails, respond to their work, do some work of my own on the essays and book manuscript under my own one these days. There's something to be said about a little free wifi.
For years I'd sit awake, filled with angst about not sleeping, watching pedantic movies (okay, I'm doing that now) like a child chanting "are we there yet?" Now, I'm looking at a map and using wifi in a similar way spritzed of Duty Free perfume ease the two day weary traveler's stench and wake up the wanderlust for a brief moment.
Can't say I complain as the wanderlust always wins out.
And yes, somewhere over the Atlantic indeed.
