A Year In Review

Well, I guess it has been nearly a year since I decided to see about not buying clothes and how much I could make.  I can say, with all honesty, that I have bought three cardigans, two pair of jeans, two plain tee shirts, some socks, knickers, and some running bras, pants, and two therma hoodies.  Beyond that. . . Mr Fairytale picked me up a vintage, handmade Wonder Woman tee at Artist and Flee months ago and a Feminist Mystique tee from The Strand last month.  Beyond that . . . well, my machine has been busy.

Most of these you have seen, as I've blogged them here or on Instagram, but none-the-less it is still fun (and a little embarrassing) to go through the past year.  Little notes, through the snap shots, kind of pave the way for ya.

Sleep Pants, Amy Butler with
Alexander Henry Fabric
A bag, I now keep ribbon in.
The lining is remnants of some cotton I
used for decorations at my wedding.
A vintage, metal zipper keeps her
closed.  Broke in the new sewing machine
 with this
one.

Booties.  Pattern from ithinksew, and
I shimmied together those pillow cases
this year too! That quilt is a few years old
and long time favorite.
I made three sets of these.
The first, these, was from
remnants.
A friend liked them so
much I mailed them to
 her, and then Tanfer asked
for a set . . . I made
one for her and me.

 Colette: Merangue from the book.
Alexander Henry, out of print, fabric.
Lined with the last of the purple lining
from the wedding chaos.  It is a favorite,
I must say.

Colette Juniper. Easy as pie.
I miss these. Matched like a boss!
Cosmo Bag, AB Pattern.
Used the most, especially at the
Green Market.  It fits like a week's worth of groceries!

Close up of the pants fabric.  Why didn't I take a better picture? Le sigh.

Right about here I got serious about the clothes, moved past "basic" patterns and started to have fun and not care if fucked something up.  For the record, there were a few disasters.  Though, if you haven't figured it out . . . these pics aren't in an exact order.  They are close though.  Makes it more amusing this way.

The Colette Sorbetto
and Ginger Skirt in
use.
Bound seams on a denim Ginger.
A nice finish it made.
Free patterns,
always fun!
My color work, first time, and first item knitted on the round.  Man I love these things.

Remember my closet right before May Me Made?
Well . . . oh my.  Let's keep looking.

Shit.  FYI, that hobo is up on my newly opened ETSY shop.
That's two cosmos, that see sooooo much use it's unbelievable.  Travel bags, that I use and no you can not have (hahahaha), and my second August Fields bag (the first died for use, but it is a pretty storage bag on top of my cabinet).

There's a third Cosmo, not pictured here, in continual use in Denver.

The fabric:

The sweater, that looked good but
didn't fit.  C'est la vie.

The Amy Butler Lotus Tunic.  Altered, again and again.  I lost some chunkage and, well, it wasn't worth altering again.  I had made it months before this photo . . .

Here's a good point to reflect/mention that taking photos of one self, while sporting me made, is often assaulting.  Shit.  Some of these shots give me body image nightmares of epic proportions.  Every woman knows these fears, and while the may not be rational I will say that . . .yea, I've got body issues just like you.

The Derby Day shirt, AKA the
Taffy sans sleeves and with a
 lace trim.
My pink Barcelona, in a pink AB fabric
with a muslin lining.
Ironically, it is a favorite for the summer.
The pink makes people look twice, as those
who know me know I don't do it often.
LOL!

Why hello Staple in Anna Maria Horner fabric.
This one has the elastic at the waist . . . I heart.

Another A-line, from the Amy Butler well used Barcelona
patter, in her Lotus line.
A Cabo Halter and Iris number two.
A friend said I was the picture of summer, in late spring here.
A Kelly in linen, with shell buttons, and an altered tee from The Gap.  Ha.  I no longer have a single tee from The Gap . . . I wonder why? Then again, I had bought that one a year before.

The Staple Dress, first version I think.
Yes, yes . . . because it has one line of elastic.
Ya know, I always do a wear a belt with
this one.  Heart it.

The Junipers I shrunk out of before winter ended.  Sad and good.
Though, I wore them once a week and still didn't feel like I'd worn them enough.  Le sigh.

Thurlow denim trousers, the wearable muslin.
Those were made with a third generation zipper
and crappy fabric.  When the zipper died I
didn't cry.
Cabo Halter number two.

Brown A-line and Muttly.
A renfrew, long dead
from over use.
Another renfrew I wore out and a
head wrap that I wear, a lot.
I made four of these, two for me.
Two were gifts.  These colors and two in pink.

I made nine pairs of cotton PJ pants for myself.
Another three pair of flannel . . . and then there are
two sets of "pairs." We'll get to those soon.
No, I'm not posting all of the PJs.

The Anniversary Dress.

Colette Truffle, in the LAST of the
fabric from my wedding chaos.
Worked great for working
graduation, as those robes are hot.
Tilly's Miette . . . which I made scandalously short by chopping too much off.
A purple Ginger.  I did not like.

My Whisken tank in Bodrum, Turkey
after a full season of wear stateside.

Insomnia bag, from the Anna
Maria Horner Multi Tasker
Tote.

Porn shorts.  How could you forget? I did live in them this summer!

Another renfrew, infinity scarf, and the porn shorts on the
Indiana/Kentucky line.

Sorbetto with an inverted pleat, from a
wrap skirt redone.

Fishscale shorts and a black Briar.

A Briar from a maxi dress that was stained.  Shirt wore well until it died too.  Damn, I go through tees a lot!

My favorite whisken tank.  Mr. Fairytale is not a fan of this one.

A Briar and Thurlows, I made with my Momma. A photo in a summer rain.

Cascade skirt.

Another Briar, and my husband lost this one in the wash!

The Date Night Dress, that became my Birthday Dress.  A pattern tester I was!

Two Simple Slips and two Date Nights!

I also call this one Oscar de la Renta no. 1, it is Oscar fabric after all!  I had quit smoking in June, and by this point of the summer I was in the hump of post smoking weight.  For the record, I can fit into my jeans again!  And in July, my birthday always falls on an egg frying hot day!

Purple Plaid Thurlows.  When will it be
warm enough to wear these again?
Grey Briar, also lost in the fucking wash.

Renfrew.

Tanfer's Weekender Bag.

My Weekender and the August Fields I showed you earlier.

Lakeside PJs.

Gingham with a side of details, on the ETSY shop too.

A baby quilt I gave to old friends . . . it covers
the top of a queen sized bed.  So not really
baby in size!

The first Archer, in white. Everyone needs
a white button down.
A pencil.  Of hounds-tooth wool.  I shrunk out.  See ETSY too.

The inside is sexy, eh?

Charolette, no. 1.  From the fish scale
leftovers.
Avocado Hoodie, round one.  Muslin for me, worn twice.
See ETSY too.

Scater, round one.  Fugly hair, look away.

Corduroy Beignet and Muttly too!

Self draft maxi, I made two  (brown and black) and
an infinity.  In Indiana seeing Uncle Harry for the last time.

Tania Culottes.  Eh, I made them too
big.  See ETSY if you are dying for them.
Sol Hoodie, 35 bones a yard ribbon (thanks Dad!), and Muttly.

Hounds tooth pencil.  Damn I love this one
Kelly denim.  Some hot stitching for top stitching.  I wear
 this one the most.

My Burda coat, my cabled hat . . . in my
Mom and Dad's front yard.
Cowl neck renfrew I made
with my Momma on the my
new serger.

My cabled hat.  Tanfer has one too.
Road trip knit.  Infinity scarf I gave away.
Then I made the husband a cowl with some
leftover yarn.

A flannel archer.

A sexy cream fall, faux silk archer, and the
muslin jeans I made from black denim.

Curtains, I made last summer.

Gray, plaid archer with blue details.

Purple flannel archer.  I love the archer pattern, can ya tell? For #archerappreciation.

A tote for a Christmas gift.

Oscar de la Renta no. 2, the
Darling Ranges Dress, and my cardi.
There's tiny white polka dots on this dress.  My weight shifted and it looked pretty saggy by September.

Socks, number one.
Hats, one for me one for
my Momma.
Avocado for my sister.

Thurlow wool trouser and a whisken from left over dress
fabric.  The pants . . .  died in the part one morning as
I wrestled with Muttly.  Yes, I walked home with my rear
flapping in the wind.

Skater, no. 2.  Black rain.  Need I say more?

Monkey pants for him and me.
McCall's 4237, a vintage
pattern passed onto me.
My monkey versions, from
my AB  standby pattern.

A Negroni flannel for him.  That face? I
think the Redskins had lost . . .again.

Matching Grinch wear for all.

Cooper Bag with waxed canvas and rip stop lining,
AKA a kit from Colette's Christmas shop.

Oh, but wait . . . there's more not here.

A blue short-sleeved briar, a bamboo Briar with a straight hem, a Bamboo Briar with a cowl neck (both in white), a grey cowl neck renfrew. my second Charolette (made with same wool as the ripped Thurlows and an added slit in the back), a leopard print Briar with long sleeves (left over Skater fabric), grey Ooh la la leggings (Papercut) that I wore with a sweater dress in sub freezing temps (I really am too chunky to wear leggings as anything beyond that), brown Expresso leggings (Cake patterns), a Chevron striped Ginger skirt (see ETSY), a pair of skill PJs for the Dude, a pair I made for a friend in silky satin, a pair I made my sister, my Colette French Panties and Cami, a ribbon scarf for Tanfer, another white renfrew, another black one, three tailor's hams, three tailor's sausages, a Amy Butler Birdie bag I made my Mom in Alexander Henry sewing home dec fabric, and the second pair of Iris shorts (that were near identical to the first) . . .

Holy shit.  That's a lot of stuff I made.  For clothing alone, minus the bags, it comes to a whopping 103 items of clothing with another four hats, three knitted scarves, one pair of knitted color worked gloves, seven infinity scarves, four head wraps, four mini wallets, one pair of booties, three sets of travel keepers (ya know, put your shampoo and shit in), eight more sizable and complex bags, and one set of curtains. I think something is missing . . . and, yes, I am slightly horrified that I made that much this year with everything else on my plate.  I am serious, I am a little embarrassed by the numbers.

Don't forget, I've published three articles this year (a fourth is waiting finalization from a press), three book reviews (or was it four?), and my own book.

It ain't my first time at the book rodeo, but I sure do love it!
I was in Turkey for a conference, in Greece, in Kentucky for a week of work, in Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Connecticut, there was a road trip to Indiana, ran another half marathon in March, and  . . . yea, I'm still cheating on my husband with New York City.  What? Everyone knows I love this city, make no bones about it.  Somewhere in there I co-ran a department, taught fifteen classes (though I think that is also sixteen as I am forgetting one), and did a handful of other things.

Holy shit.

So what is up for next year?

In brief: books three and four and five (three is the diss made book, four an enviro antho, and five is a Turk feminism antho).

One co-written article that I am finishing now.

January: grant proposals.

Amsterdam and The Hague in March/April for a conference.  That paper is part of a book that will be the sole focus on life come this time next year.

Turkey in May.

Ohio might happen in July. Waiting to see.

I hope I am invited back for another week of scoring in June down in the Bluegrass.

A knitted pullover, for certain.

One French Jacket.  Yes, yes.

Of course, there is a load of other things in the works . . . but I'll do that in another post.  Oh yea, the February half marathon in Central Park is coming too!
