Thurlow Love

For starters, I was going to name this post porn shorts, but I doubted some of the people who link to me would appreciate that and I didn't want to get hit with all the internet creepers. Yet, using porn in this post will...oh nevermind. You are welcome for not having porn shorts show on your blogs.  Creepers, keep your perv to yourself. Thanks.

Now, onto to the love of my summer.  The thurlow shorts from Sewaholic Patterns.  Lauren, at Lladybird, has done a gazillion versions, and just as she's in her honeymoon phase with them so am I.

They are lovely, comfy, and...well, I have a story for you. In high school, just when fast fashion and stores like The Limited and The Gap took over, yet were still expensive to a kid like me, I got to get a bunch of clothes one summer. I got a pair of light denim (it was the 90s, do not judge), that had cuffs, were oh so comfy, and I supported those bad boys through half of grad school. Yea, I had them for like ten years. They were perfect.

Then one day I put them on and felt naked. I hit that strange moment of my twenties when nothing worked, and I suddenly saw the ragged edges and worn spots. I tossed them. In all fairness, they were well worn, loved, and I wore them for like four years straight, then didn't for several, and so forth. So away went the shorts, and then I half heartedly looked for shorts for years, mostly giving up, and then...then I saw this pattern, did a test run of pants, decided shorts would be fun to make even if I didn't wear them, and...well, I LOVE them.

How can you not? They ARE the same shape and style of my beloved pair from years ago. I'm wearing them now, as I wait at LGA for my flight.

They fit like a dream because like a good seamstress I adjusted the pattern to me, and I used fab lining for the pockets and waistband. Yes, that's the porn part. My husband calls them my porn shorts. Why? Well, the half naked cowboys and since I didn't add the denim tab to the bound pockets you can see them peeking put of the rear sometimes. What?! It is sooooooooo very cool.

When I finished them I was even excited. Usually with pants I'm just eh about them.  These.... I was dancing around the apartment, saying "Look, no wedgie. And nooooo crow's feet." Mr. Fairytale laughed, yet thinks me and my shorts are cute. Though, his first response (after shaking his head and dubbing them porn shorts while I was making them) was to say, "You have naked cowboys sticking out of your butt."  Yes, yes I do. The cowboys have baby blues, just like me.

Note, they are a straight 12 with the butt graded to a 16. Used a vintage button (circa 1970s) as I only had two and it is sturdy and cute where it is at inside the waistband. And check out my welt pockets! Best I have EVER done.

So, I'm making a few more pair this summer. But, this week is no sewing as I'm off to Kentucky for a week with The College Board and what I call Summer Camp for Nerds, or the grading of AP Exams. This week is always busy, long, fun, and tiring. Perhaps I'll post of runs across First Street Bridge to Indiana, bike rides, and other things.  Tonight I'll post the FINAL Me Made May round up from my computer, so I can get the photos positioned right. This one is from my tablet, so the photos are limited at the end.

Ammunition and Mountainsides

 Two weeks into a six-week solo voyage, I finally felt my nervous system start to settle.  Settle after nine months of constant alert, nine months of wonder, nine months of life on hold.  Since April, my Dad's throat cancer has been clear, but the lung is being watched, and the trach had to come out weeks after the last radiation.  My Mom has been holding her own.  They're stable, and for the most part, my autoimmune chaos has been manageable.  Mom and Dad needed me here, in the states, so I took a few weeks this summer to scratch off a handful of National Parks and a dream--long overdue--road trip I've long talked about.  So, two weeks into a six-week hiking trip, I finally felt myself settle.  The solitude has been a welcome relief from nights and days of endless dark wonder.   In Montana, after visiting Kansas City, Wind Cave and the Badlands in South Dakota, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and Custer State Park (SD),  I felt myself...

Writer's Notes.

I've been writing again, and here's something different.  Vignettes and notes from the long piece I'm finishing this week.  Sometimes, the fiction we write can leave marks.  Deep marks.   While in Greece I've been working on the day job and getting back to my roots and me.  Enjoy the notes and windows into the next phase. Next time I'll pull out the notes on dating again.  Joy.  Now there's an absolute joy, so much that at one point I forgot how to speak English at the luscious advances of an American in Greece.  (Note the dripping sarcasm).   Greece has my heart in many ways, even with a stress and workload--this year--of epic proportions.  I am obsessed with life here, I keep coming back, and it feels like home time and time again.  Since that first voyage in 2013, when my best friend had to drag me back on the ferry to Turkey, to now when I wander Athens.  I stroll along these streets with such ease, knowing this c...
