Election email woes
I apologize. Below is the email I just received . . . I have removed the multiple links for continued donations. Read below for my response.
And if you did not know, I am an Obama supporter. I continue to be one. This email, from the Democratic committee, is just poor form.
Annessa — We're reviewing supporter records in advance of the final Federal Election Commission deadline and noticed you haven't yet made a contribution to protect President Obama and a Democratic Senate. I pasted your supporter record below:
Supporter record: 21746160
Most recent: none
Suggested: $5
Election Day: 22 days
If you are concerned about Republicans defeating President Obama and taking over the Senate, time is now short. This is the final FEC deadline before the election. More than 20,000 supporters have contributed in the last week alone, can you join them?
[Redacted links for donations]
Thank you for your time and commitment to this cause,

If we got your most recent donation wrong, it may be because you gave offline or with a different email address.

My response:
To Whom This May Concern,
This type of email is offensive, on more than one level.
I, like many others, am underemployed. I work for no less than five education employers to pay bills. More so, glitches--or mishaps I have no desire to go into--have delayed my pay. Asking me for five dollars, when I may or may not see my paycheck this week, is offensive.
Five dollars is not a lot to give; I am AWARE. Yet, your records that could not possibly know that A) my paycheck is late and B) I am one of the growing majority without health insurance (and I battle Lupus to boot) fail to connect with the Obama for America records that show I gave give not once, not twice, but THREE times to this 2012 election.
I teach college classes. I encourage my students to vote. I encourage them to debate the issues of the day. I tell them of how much I owe in student loans, that I was working class, that I do not have health insurance, and . . . that I fear a world that Mitt Romney takes office and dismantles public education, public housing, and women's rights.
Accordingly, I do support this Democratic campaign. I have given, what I can. I hope--and even pray (if that is even PC these days)--that many more will. Yet, please do not pander to my email account in such an egregious manner.
For the record, I could afford five dollars today. But I will not donate it to DSCC.org. Why? An email, so carelessly thought out as this one, keeps my five dollars in my pocket. That five dollars will most likely find its way into a Lupus donation bin, a Planned Parenthood container, the hand of my local community election committee (in Queens, NYC), or in the continually depleted pot of NOW.
Sincerely,
X, PhD
