Things I Miss
In no particular order.
1. I miss traffic. Seriously, some days I miss the smell of smog and congestion so much that I fight the urge to lick my tailpipe to give me that nauseous feeling of smog.
2. There was an episode of _Sex and the City_ when Carrie and the girls talked about their secret single behavior. Carrie said she ate saltine crackers with grape jelly while standing in her kitchen reading fashion magazines. I almost fell off of my futon that night. While I despise grape jelly and saltines, I did love standing in my kitchen eating raspberry jam on crackers. I also usually read a trashy magazine while doing so. I shit you not.
3. I miss sitting on my yoga ball while watching tv and grading papers. Really, I did do that. My stomach was firmer . . .
4. There is something to be said about walking around your house and not worrying about a robe or towel. Yes, folks . . . this is known as being naked. Even better is leaving your clothes on the floor and not giving a rats ass because you'll get them in the morning when you hit the shower.
5. Glasses of wine while I sprawled oddly in the chair, or on the futon, while answering personal emails at two am. This said glass of wine was not necessarily in a wine glass, always glass though as I learned the plastic tumbler lesson in college.
6. I miss looking into my refrigerator and seeing a half empty bottle of VitaWater, finishing off the creamer, glancing at a partially used container of Duke's Mayonnaise, one avocado, part of a wedge of Parmesan cheese, and usually a half-eaten leftover from last week's dinner. The rush to the grocery store before the quickly eaten avocado wore off followed . . . clearly, this happened more than once. For the record, this is called a Bachelorette Fridge, and it is good for not wasting food. ;)
7. Coffee shops, even Starsmell, should be cherished. The closest I have around here is 7-11, and let's face it . . . Sevs is not cuttin' it.
8. I've never been good with the bar crowd, and I rarely went. But . . . I miss going to the bar once a month or so. I also miss having lunch counters in the market. I had some of the best conversations there.
9. I miss wasting time, and sometimes money, at strip malls and beaches. In the dead of winter I loved the beach the best. I doesn't take much for me to smell the salt, cold (bitterly so), and seaweed riddled air.
10. My favorite bodega for an everything bagel with mayo, salt, Munster cheese, and fried eggs. I used to get one of these outside Penn and eat it while walking to the NYPL. These were best in the colder months, eaten while bundled up, and almost jogging to the building. It was cold. Damn.
11. My checking account misses regular paychecks, and paychecks that actually cover the expenses. I think the companies I have bills with miss this too. Underemployment sucks, on so many levels.
12. I miss wearing heals, jewelry, and perfume to work. I can't always do that now, as prisons are a whole different element.
13. I miss living somewhere where wearing a blazer, jeans, and healed boots did not make you over dressed for teaching, grocery shopping, bars, or . . . well just about anything.
14. I miss the Fluff and Fold. Yup, I would squeeze pennies so that I didn't have to be bothered with doing my own laundry. Mom does my laundry on occasion, so I guess free is just as good.
Now that I have probably revealed too much, or not enough at all . . . I wouldn't say I'm sadder for writing this, or happier, but I am something.
